Kilowatt-hour Meter

What Is a Kilowatt-hour Meter?

A kilowatt-hour meter is a device used to measure the total amount of electrical energy consumed by a building, facility, or electrical system.

The meter records energy usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh), which represents the amount of energy used when one kilowatt of power is consumed for one hour.

Utilities use kilowatt-hour meters to measure energy consumption and determine electricity charges for residential, commercial, and industrial customers.

How a Kilowatt-hour Meter Works

Kilowatt-hour meters measure electrical energy by tracking both power usage and time.

E = P \times t

Where:

  • E = Energy (kilowatt-hours)

  • P = Power (kilowatts)

  • t = Time (hours)

The meter continuously measures the flow of electricity into a system and calculates the total energy consumed over time.

Modern digital meters often provide additional capabilities such as:

  • Real-time energy monitoring

  • Demand measurement

  • Load profiling

  • Remote utility reporting

Types of Kilowatt-hour Meters

Several types of meters are used depending on the application.

Electromechanical Meters
Traditional meters that use rotating disks to measure energy consumption.

Digital Smart Meters
Modern electronic meters that provide advanced monitoring, communication, and energy analytics.

Submeters
Installed within facilities to measure energy usage for specific departments, equipment, or tenants.

Kilowatt-hour Meters Across Enercon-Supported Industries

Data Centers

Data centers rely on detailed energy monitoring to track power consumption across IT loads, cooling infrastructure, and facility systems. Kilowatt-hour meters support energy efficiency planning and operational management.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing facilities monitor energy usage to optimize production processes and manage operational energy costs.

Commercial Facilities

Commercial buildings use kilowatt-hour meters to measure total facility energy consumption and support energy management programs.

Healthcare Facilities

Hospitals track electrical consumption to maintain reliable power infrastructure while managing operational efficiency across medical equipment and facility systems.

Wastewater

Wastewater treatment plants monitor energy usage for pumps, motors, and treatment processes to manage operational efficiency.

Green Energy

Renewable energy installations use kilowatt-hour meters to measure electricity production and track the amount of energy delivered to the grid.

Energy Monitoring in Engineered Power Systems

Accurate measurement of electrical energy is essential for understanding facility performance, managing operating costs, and planning electrical infrastructure capacity. Energy monitoring systems help organizations identify inefficiencies and improve overall system performance.

Enercon designs and integrates electrical distribution systems that support energy monitoring and performance visibility through engineered switchgear and power management solutions. These systems support reliable operation and energy tracking across mission-critical environments, including data centers, healthcare facilities, manufacturing plants, commercial buildings, wastewater treatment facilities, and renewable energy installations.
