Understanding the Different Levels of Switchgear Retrofits.

Switchgear retrofitting involves upgrading or replacing components of an existing switchgear system to enhance its performance, reliability, and safety. By understanding the different retrofit levels, you can make informed decisions to optimize your switchgear infrastructure. Whether you're an industry professional or simply curious about switchgear retrofits, this guide will provide you with valuable information to navigate the complexities of retrofitting and ensure the optimal functioning of your switchgear system.

Level 1: Individual Parts Replacement - This level involves the quotation and replacement of specific parts within the control panel without addressing the entire system as a whole. The warranty provided only covers the replaced parts, and it is important to maintain proper documentation to ensure that peripheral equipment or other items in the panel do not cause any failures, whether in the new part or elsewhere.

Level 2: Major Component Replacement - At this level, major components are replaced as a set. Certain non-critical items like relays or terminal boards may be reused if they are still functional. The focus is on replacing significant electronic or programmable devices within the control panel. The Sequence of Operation (SOP) can be modified, updated, or changed based on the specific project requirements. The warranty provided covers only the parts that have been replaced.

Level 3: Total Control Replacement - This level involves the removal of all existing controls except for the power envelope, potential transformers (PTs), and current transformers (CTs). Replacement door plates and pans are installed, and all-new controls are supplied for the panel. The SOP is thoroughly reviewed and verified, and any necessary updates are made. All controls, sequences, programming, wiring, and devices are covered under warranty.

Level 4: Total Gear Replacement - At this level, after a site assessment, it is determined that the control panel is non-salvageable and requires a complete replacement. This includes replacing the entire gear, encompassing all components, devices, wiring, and any associated equipment within the control panel.
