What Is an Ohmmeter?
An ohmmeter is an instrument used to measure the electrical resistance of a circuit, conductor, or electrical component. Resistance is measured in ohms (Ω).
Ohmmeters are commonly used by engineers and technicians to verify circuit integrity, test electrical components, and troubleshoot electrical systems.
Modern ohmmeters are often integrated into multimeters, which can measure additional electrical properties such as voltage and current.
How an Ohmmeter Works
An ohmmeter measures resistance by applying a small known voltage to a circuit and measuring the resulting current.
Using the relationship described by Ohm’s Law, the device calculates the resistance value.
R=VIR = \frac{V}{I}R=IV
Where:
R = resistance (ohms)
V = applied voltage
I = measured current
By determining how much current flows through the circuit, the ohmmeter can calculate the resistance.
Types of Ohmmeters
