Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS)

What Is SBIRS?

SBIRS (Space-Based Infrared System) is a United States Space Force satellite system designed to provide advanced infrared space surveillance and missile warning capabilities.

It supports national defense by detecting and tracking missile launches and other heat-related events from space using infrared sensors.

SBIRS is a critical component of the United States’ modern missile defense and early warning infrastructure.

How SBIRS Works

SBIRS uses a combination of space-based and ground-based systems to detect and analyze infrared signals.

The system includes:

  • Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO) satellites for continuous global monitoring

  • Highly Elliptical Orbit (HEO) sensors for coverage of high-latitude regions

  • Ground-based processing systems for data analysis and control

Infrared sensors detect heat signatures from missile launches and transmit data to ground stations for analysis and response.

Core Capabilities of SBIRS

SBIRS is designed to support multiple mission-critical functions:

Missile Warning
Detects and tracks missile launches in real time.

Missile Defense Support
Provides targeting and tracking data for interception systems.

Battlespace Awareness
Enhances situational awareness for defense operations.

Technical Intelligence
Collects and analyzes infrared data for national security purposes.

Why SBIRS Matters for Infrastructure and Power Systems

Systems like SBIRS depend on highly reliable, continuously operating infrastructure, including electrical and data systems.

These systems require:

  • Continuous, uninterrupted power

  • Redundant electrical distribution systems

  • High-performance data processing environments

  • Secure and resilient infrastructure

Even brief disruptions can impact mission-critical operations.

SBIRS and Enercon-Supported Industries

Military & Defense

SBIRS is a cornerstone of modern defense systems, requiring highly reliable electrical infrastructure to support satellite operations, ground stations, and control systems.

Data Centers

SBIRS relies on advanced data processing systems supported by data centers that require stable and redundant power systems.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing supports the production of satellite components, sensors, and supporting electrical systems used in defense infrastructure.

Oil & Gas

Remote and harsh operating environments in oil and gas mirror the reliability requirements of defense infrastructure systems.

Healthcare Facilities

Healthcare systems rely on similar principles of uninterrupted power and system reliability for life-critical operations.

Commercial Infrastructure

Commercial electrical systems often adopt redundancy and reliability strategies similar to those used in mission-critical defense systems.

Mission-Critical Power for Advanced Systems

Space-based and defense systems like SBIRS require electrical infrastructure that delivers continuous, stable, and resilient power across complex environments.

Enercon designs and integrates electrical distribution systems that support reliable power delivery in high-demand and mission-critical environments. Through engineered switchgear, integrated power solutions, and resilient system design, Enercon helps organizations maintain stable electrical infrastructure across defense installations, data centers, industrial operations, healthcare facilities, and commercial infrastructure.
