Space Tracking and Surveillance System (STSS)

What Is STSS?

STSS (Space Tracking and Surveillance System) is a constellation of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites designed to detect and track ballistic missiles globally.

It is part of the United States’ Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) and provides continuous tracking of missile threats across all phases of flight.

STSS enhances missile defense by delivering precise tracking data that supports interception and threat assessment.

How STSS Works

STSS uses space-based sensors and ground-based systems to monitor missile activity in real time.

The system includes:

  • Low-Earth orbit satellites for global coverage and continuous tracking

  • Infrared and tracking sensors to detect missile signatures

  • Ground-based processing systems for data analysis and control

Unlike some systems that track only part of a missile’s trajectory, STSS is designed to maintain tracking across all flight phases.

Role in Ballistic Missile Defense

STSS plays a critical role in supporting missile defense operations by providing:

Full Trajectory Tracking
Tracks missiles during boost, midcourse, and terminal phases.

Target Discrimination
Distinguishes between actual warheads and decoys.

System Integration Support
Provides data to cue radars and guide interceptor systems.

Intercept Assessment
Supplies data used to evaluate whether a target has been successfully neutralized.

Key Advantages of STSS

STSS offers several capabilities that enhance defense systems:

  • Global coverage without reliance on foreign basing

  • Continuous monitoring of emerging and known threats

  • High-precision tracking across all phases of flight

  • Dual-sensor capability for improved target discrimination

These features make STSS a valuable component of modern missile defense architecture.

STSS and Enercon-Supported Industries

Military & Defense

STSS supports advanced missile defense systems that depend on reliable electrical infrastructure for satellite control, ground stations, and system integration.

Data Centers

STSS relies on high-performance data processing environments supported by data centers that require redundant and stable power systems.
