What Is an Open Circuit?
An open circuit occurs when an electrical path is broken, preventing current from flowing through the circuit.
This condition can happen when a conductor is interrupted by a broken wire, disconnected component, or open switch. Because the electrical path is incomplete, no current can pass through the circuit.
An open circuit can be compared to a closed valve in a water system, where the flow of water is completely blocked.
How an Open Circuit Affects Electrical Systems
In a functioning circuit, current flows continuously through a closed loop. When a circuit becomes open, the electrical path is interrupted.
Even if voltage is present at the power source, current cannot flow because the path is incomplete.
Using Ohm’s Law:
I=VRI = \frac{V}{R}I=RV
When resistance becomes extremely large (as it effectively does in an open circuit), the current approaches zero.
