Protective Relay

What Is a Protective Relay?

A protective relay is an electrical protection device designed to detect abnormal operating conditions or faults in an electrical system and automatically trip a circuit breaker.


Protective relays monitor electrical parameters such as:

  • Current

  • Voltage

  • Frequency

  • Power flow

When the relay detects conditions outside safe operating limits, it sends a signal to open a circuit breaker, disconnecting the affected portion of the electrical system to prevent equipment damage or safety hazards.

How Protective Relays Work

Protective relays operate by continuously monitoring electrical system conditions.

The process typically follows these steps:

  1. Monitoring – The relay measures electrical parameters such as current and voltage.

  2. Fault Detection – The relay compares measured values to predefined protection settings.

  3. Trip Signal – If a fault condition is detected, the relay sends a signal to trip the circuit breaker.

  4. System Isolation – The breaker opens to isolate the faulty section of the electrical system.
