What Is a Relay?

A relay is an electrically operated switch that uses a small control current to operate a switch capable of controlling a much larger current.


Relays allow low-power control circuits to safely operate high-power electrical equipment. They are widely used in automation systems, electrical protection systems, and industrial control circuits.


Because relays separate the control circuit from the power circuit, they help improve system safety and control flexibility.

How a Relay Works

A relay typically consists of an electromagnetic coil, a movable armature, and electrical contacts.


The operation follows these steps:

  1. A small current flows through the relay’s coil.

  2. The coil generates a magnetic field.

  3. The magnetic field moves the armature.

  4. The armature opens or closes electrical contacts in another circuit.

This mechanism allows a low-power signal to control a higher-power electrical load.

Types of Relays

Different relay types are used depending on the application.


Electromechanical Relays
Use a physical coil and moving contacts to open or close a circuit.


Solid-State Relays
Use semiconductor components instead of mechanical contacts, allowing faster switching and longer lifespan.


Protective Relays
