Terminal Phase

What Is the Terminal Phase?

The terminal phase is the final stage of a ballistic missile’s trajectory, when the warhead re-enters the Earth’s atmosphere and moves toward its intended target.


This phase occurs after the boost phase and midcourse phase and represents the last opportunity for interception before impact.

How the Terminal Phase Works

During the terminal phase:

  1. The warhead re-enters the Earth’s atmosphere at high speed

  2. Atmospheric forces such as heat and drag begin to affect the trajectory

  3. The warhead descends rapidly toward the target

  4. Defense systems attempt final interception if applicable

Because of the extreme speed and short time window, this phase is one of the most challenging for missile defense systems.

Characteristics of the Terminal Phase

The terminal phase has several defining features:


High Velocity
Warheads travel at extremely high speeds, reducing reaction time.


Atmospheric Re-Entry
Friction generates intense heat as the warhead re-enters the atmosphere.


Limited Response Time

Final Targeting Stage
This is the last opportunity to intercept or mitigate the threat.
